Bible reflection
The Lord says, “Now let’s
settle the matter. You are stained red with sin, but I will wash you as
clean as snow. Although your stains are deep red, you will be as white
as wool.”
(Isaiah 1.18)
Sin is a tricky notion. We often deny our sinfulness. This leads to a
failure to take responsibility for what we do to ourselves and to
ourselves, and a tendency to blame other people for our mistakes. The
other extreme is to imagine that we are so guilty that there is no way
out. God takes a different view. His love for us does not depend on our
being good. He gives us it unconditionally. And because he loves we are
free in two ways: to acknowledge our responsibility and act accordingly;
and to know that our failures are not the last word. God has a way of
re-creating us, a genuine fresh start without the legacies of the past.
